The low door

From the 14th century onwards, this entrance porch provided access to the interior of the town.

It opened onto the Rue Droite, which runs right through Barjac. This thoroughfare has been the town's main shopping street since the end of the 14th century and for over 500 years.

Since the 13th century, Barjac has been at the crossroads of the great trade routes between the Vivarais and Languedoc regions. The tradition continues today with the two famous antique and flea markets at Easter and around 15 August.

The restored château, dating from the early 17th century, has become the centre of the village's cultural life, hosting the town hall, cinema, library, activity rooms, exhibition halls and concert halls.

A tour takes in the "Renaissance Tower", the Lower Gate, the Capuchin chapel, the town houses and their towers, the market square shaded by plane trees, the Upper Gate and the Grand'Rue, St Laurent church, the esplanade and fountain, the market hall...

Few towns are as rich in prehistoric remains as Barjac.

Fifteen dolmens have been identified in the surrounding area and, based on the simplicity of their architecture, can be dated to the Bronze Age, i.e. the 2nd millennium AD: these are typical Languedoc chest dolmens.
