Les Lauriers Roses

Barjac is a commune in the Gard department in the south of France.

The Cèze valley lies to the south, and the Ardèche river 10 km to the north.

Barjac is a Renaissance town. The old town centre has preserved its old narrow streets, squares and houses from the period. The castle of the Counts of Roure with its stone courtyard, formerly known as the "Citadelle", was rebuilt several times from the 12th century onwards.

This imposing building now houses a library in the former stables and a cinema in the former kitchens. The château is also the venue for the "Chansons de Paroles" festival, held every year at the end of July.

German contemporary artist Anselm Kiefer set up his studio, known as Ribaute, in Barjac in 1993, on a 35-hectare former industrial wasteland.
